THE CONTEMPLATION OF GNOMES

Gnomes in the garden Gnomes in time
Upon a time frozen
What do they rhyme
Some are on mushrooms
Some are on toads
Their faces of joy
Hide such haunting modes
How can such faces
A-be so sad
Oh for a wizard
To make them quite glad
A wand in her hand
Coming up the gravel drive
She would tap and she would yell
She would chant her great spell

There was once a one
Peaches his name
He was made from salt
And a pure horse’s mane
Trapped with a rod In hand by a pond
Oh where is that wizard With her trusty wand
Oh dirty Bertie
He is caught in a pose
One he rather regretted
Right down to his toes
They call for the moon
To shine down on them
She will be good you can tell
She will chant her great spell

What is it turned the gnomes to stone
What is it they have left unknown
Magic spells and bewitch-a-m-m-ment
The moon in winter its power all spent

If you catch them in the garden
Don’t bother looking again
They become painted plaster
Kitsch little men
Till the moon releases
And away they go
If you stare too long
It can never be so
They shall remain frozen
For ever and one day
There is nothing to be felt
Even the moon cannot help

Varnished and tarnished
It’s life chipped from stone
That is a-why they are
A-prostrate and prone
But painting and powder
Is not what they’re about
They’re real live fleshy
They bend and they pout
When they are quicker
It comes as no surprise
That we cannot see them
They’re invisible to our eyes
We need to look away
And let the moon do its work
They would melt and solidify
Become a real gnome sort of guy
